RULES ON TEAM NOTEBOOKS
(as of 27 November 2011)

A team is allowed to bring into the contest area, three copies of a team notebook, one copy for each contestant.The notebook must be a three-ring binder that can hold 8.5" x 11" letter-size pages. Each notebook should have the name of the school and the name of the team prominently indicated on its front cover.The notebook must have four sections, each section starting with a tabbed divider, labeled NOTES, HANDOUTS, REFERENCE, and WORK.NOTES -- contains at most four (4) pages of single-sided hand-written notes.

HANDOUTS -- contains only those handouts provided by the ACM ICPC Asia Manila 2011 staff. These handouts may include hand-written comments and corrections.

REFERENCE -- contains up to twenty-five pages of printed notes, single spaced, in 12 point font of the team's choice, with one-inch margins on all sides. These notes must be the same for all three members of the team.

WORK -- contains a reasonable number, but not more than 100 pages, of blank bond paper and graphing paper, all letter-size, for the team member to use as scratch papers during the contest.The notebook may have a plastic pouch containing pencils, pens, erasers, ruler, compass, protractor, and triangles.The team members may not bring a calculator to the contest.Each team member may bring a dictionary for translation purposes. The only marking allowed on the dictionary is the identity of the owner.

A page is defined as one side of a bond paper. So one bond paper with a back-to-back print is considered two pages.

I saw Bob Shrike today (Wednesday, 22 June 2011) at 10:45 a.m. perched on a twig of a tree. He looked like he was drenched from the rain and was "cleaning" himself. At some point in time he suddenly flew away when he heard the sound of a "baby" bird, presumably his fledgling (inakay). I followed him but I was not able to see the "baby" bird; I only heard its cry...

The map shows the approximate ROUTE taken during the BIRDWALK on 11 April 2011. The group convened at the Manila Observatory around 3:30 p.m. Then, it moved toward Seminary Road infront of the JesCom Bldg. Then it followed the path towards Cervini Residence passing through the elevated steps. From Cervini, the group passed by the Church of the Gesu and stopped at the Wildlife Sanctuary infront of the Jesuit Residence. From there, the group went back to the Manila Observatory passing through Fr. Masterson Drive. The BIRDWALK lasted approximately two hours.

Welcome to the 2010 ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest-- 4th Philippine National Programming Competition, hosted by Ateneo de Manila University.

The ACM ICPC is a prestigious event that aims to raise the awareness of the public about the important role of Information Technology in the development of our country and our society.Its objective of bringing together bright and talented young people from different countries to take part in a grueling friendly competition, like a mental Olympiad, is quite noble.

This is the fourth ACM national programming competition organized by the Computing Society of the Philippines in collaboration with the ACM. The first national contest was held in 2007 in De La Salle - Canlubang, the second was held in the University of San Jose-Recoletos (Basak Campus) in 2008, and the third was held in Ateneo de Manila University in 2009.

To all participants and coaches, I hope that you will take advantage of this opportunity to meet and interact with your fellow competitors from all over the Philippines. I also hope that you will also enjoy your stay at the Ateneo de Naga University.

RULES ON TEAM NOTEBOOKS
(as of November 18, 2010)

A team is allowed to bring into the contest area, three copies of a team notebook, one copy for each contestant.The notebook must be a three-ring binder that can hold 8.5" x 11" letter-size pages. Each notebook should have the name of the school and the name of the team prominently indicated on its front cover.The notebook must have four sections, each section starting with a tabbed divider, labeledNOTES, HANDOUTS, REFERENCE, and WORK.

NOTES -- contains at most four (4) pages of single-sided hand-written notes.

HANDOUTS -- contains only those handouts provided by the ACM-ICPC-Philippine staff. These handouts may include hand-written comments andcorrections.

REFERENCE -- contains up to twenty-five pages of printed notes, single spaced, in 12 point font of the team's choice, with one-inch margins on all sides. These notes must be the same for all three members of the team.

WORK -- contains a reasonable number, but not more than 100 pages, of blank bond paper and graphing paper, all letter-size, for the team member to use as scratch papers during the contest.The notebook may have a plastic pouch containing pencils, pens, erasers, ruler, compass, protractor, and triangles.The team members may not bring a calculator to the contest.Each team member may bring a dictionary for translation purposes. The only marking allowed on the dictionary is the identity of the owner.

Clarification (issued on Nov. 18, 2010): A page is defined as one side of a bond paper. So one bond paper with a back-to-back print is considered two pages.

"Poverty and inequality have been recurrent challenges in the Philippines and have again come to the fore in the wake of the current global financial crisis and rising food, fuel, and commodity prices experiend in 2008."

Current Profile of Poverty in the Country
------------------------------------------------

* Poverty incidence among households increased from 24.4% in 2003 to 26.9% in 2006

* The number of poor families (households) increased from 4.0 million in 2003 to 4.7 million in 2006.

* The headcount index increased from 30.0% in 2003 to 32.9% in 2006

* The number of poor people increased from 23.8 million in 2003 to 27.6 million in 2006.

* According to the 2006 poverty data, Mindanao has the highest poverty incidence at 38.8% but Luzon has the highest number of poor families, with almost 2 million families (42.4% of the total).

* Self-rated poverty has ranged from 50% to 52% for most of the 2008, peaking at 59% (an estimated 10.6 million people) in the second quarter.

*Inequality has also been persistent over the years. Although the Gini coefficient improved to 0.4580 in 2006 from 0.4605 in 2003 and 0.4872 in 2000, the level of inequality remains hign compared with other countries in Asia has hardly changed for more tha 20 years.

*High inequality has limited the impact of economic growth on proverty reduction.

UN-HABITAT Urban Youth Fund

Youth-led organizations in developing countries working to improve the lives of young people and their communities can now seek financing for their projects through the UN-HABITAT Urban Youth Fund. The Fund will provide grants for innovative projects that promote employment, good governance, shelter and secure tenure.

Only applicants aged 15-32 from cities in developing countries can qualify for a grant. Support will be provided primarily for those working to improve slum conditions and to raise opportunities for young people growing up in poverty. Projects encouraging gender equality or involving partnerships with the government or the private sector are particularly welcome. Small development initiatives are eligible for grants of up to USD 5,000, and larger projects up to USD 25,000.

Announcement

Taking into account the dynamism of the ICT sector in Asia, a regional program for education
and fundamental and applied research in ICT has been set up through the scientific network
of the French cooperation in this region, along with research bodies and higher education
institutions.

The ICT-Asia program of the French Ministries of Foreign and European Affairs
and of Higher Education and Research was launched in November 2003 in Bangkok at the
first regional seminar held at the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), which was attended by
more than 70 representatives from France and a dozen countries in the region.

Organized by the Embassy of France in Tokyo and the French Regional Delegation for
Co-operation in South-East Asia, the 7th Regional Conference in the framework of the
ICT-Asia Scheme will be held at the Keio University in Tokyo - Japan, on March 15 &
16, 2010.

This symposium will give the opportunity, inter alia, to follow up on the 5 projects selected
under the fifth call for proposals in 2008 (you are kindly advised to read their descriptions

Introduction

Agent-Based Social Simulation is a relatively new social science research method. It allows social phenomena to be investigated by studying dynamic processes in computational models of populations. Social simulation complements existing social science research methods and builds on empirical findings and theories of social phenomena. Applications of social simulation range from the study of basic demographic processes to uses in a range of interdisciplinary research areas such as public health, urban studies or criminology, to name a few examples.

Social scientists as well as other professionals such as policy makers have used various methods in the past to model social phenomena and generate predictions about them. At its simplest, one can extrapolate from empirical data by fitting functions that approximate the data gathered. In the past, a key limitation for such extrapolations was that the underlying model was a static one, defined in terms of mathematical formulas that could be manipulated manually. The necessary simplifying assumptions often meant that the applicability and the predictive power of these models was limited. The advent of computers and their increasing capacity has made it possible to build models that consist of representations of social agents and their environment and to simulate their behaviour and interactions.

Such agent based models (ABMs) are still limited by the capacity and processing speed of today's computer systems. It is now possible to simulate relatively large populations with a reasonable number of variables even on a desktop computer. However, to study social phenomena it is often necessary to run multiple simulations that vary specific variables in order to study their impact. Such parameter studies can be relatively easily distributed across a number of computers using grid technologies. Each instance of a simulation run with a specific set of parameters can be sent to a different machine in a grid, with all the machines working in parallel to produce an overall result.

Aims

This tutorial aims to provide an introduction to the principles behind social simulation and to demonstrate these principles by teaching participants how to develop a social simulation model and running a simulation using the Repast Simphony Toolkit. Building and running this model will involve the creation of a model population on the basis of freely available social science datasets. In order to investigate hypotheses or to test the impact of policy interventions of real-world events, it is often necessary to run ensembles of simulation jobs. Running such ensembles is most effectively done on high throughput computing infrastructures such as grids or clouds. Participants will learn about grids and clouds and will start using them by submitting ensembles of the models on real-world infrastructures.

EUAsiaGrid Workshop on Natural Disaster Mitigation

The EUAsiaGrid Workshop on Natural Disaster Mitigation will be held from 30 November to 2 December 2009 in the Imperial Tara Hotel, Sukhumvit 26, Bangkok, Thailand.

This event is hosted by Hydro and Agro Informatics Institute (HAII), National Electronics and computer Technology Centre (NECTEC) from Thailand, and Academia Sinica Grid Computing Centre (ASGC) from Taiwan.

The Asia Pacific region is a hazard prone area, and many countries in this region are at relatively high risk of multiple major natural hazards such as earthquakes, volcanoes, floods, etc. Many endeavours to mitigate catastrophes were deployed ranging from building sensor networks for monitoring and proactive alarm to building more accurate simulation model for potential disasters.

An advanced e-Infrastructure is the most viable way to integrate current solutions, and engage more experts, knowledge and technology for continuously improved services for risk management and hazard mitigation. The EUAsiaGrid Workshop on Natural Disaster Mitigation aims to facilitate a grid-based e-Science Infrastructure for hazards mitigation with the collaboration with domain experts.

During this workshop, earthquake and climate change will be the two main topics. Use cases of Grid applications will be demonstrated. In addition, sharing mechanism of local data, content standards for hazards mitigation information system, analysis tools and simulation models will also be discussed. The workshop allows us the opportunities to exchange new ideas about grid-based simulation tools and new collaboration model.

Marasigan, Reyes, Ruiz named emeritus professors

Three Loyola Schools faculty members will be conferred the rank of Professor Emeritus for their exceptional service and “distinguished academic record.” The announcement was made by Ateneo President Bienvenido F. Nebres, SJ on November 9, 2009, after the recommendation of the Committee on Faculty Rank and Permanent Appointment and the approval of the Board of Trustees.

The new emeritus professors are Dr. Jose A. Marasigan and Dr. Mari-Jo P. Ruiz both from the Department of Mathematics, and Dr. Soledad S. Reyes of the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies.

Dr. Jose A. Marasigan
Dr. Marasigan finished BS Mathematics (Honors Course) at the Ateneo de Manila University in 1962. He pursued further studies at the Technische Hochschule Darmstadt in the former West Germany as a fellow of the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD) until he earned his Doctorate in Natural Sciences (Mathematics) in 1971. He completed his DAAD Postdoctoral Fellowship from March -June 1979.

As exchange scientist for the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS), Dr. Marasigan worked with fellow scientists at the following academic institutions: Sophia University (1982), Tokyo Institute of Technology (1982), Osaka University (1990), Osaka Kyoiku University (1991), Hirosaki University (1993), and Osaka University (1995).

In 1984, he was the Australian Universities' International Development Program Fellow at the Australian National University and, in 2007, an IMAMIS Visiting Fellow at the University of Nice, France.

He is a multi-awarded professor both here and abroad. His awards include the Young Mathematician Grant of the International Mathematical Union (IMU) to the International Congress of Mathematicians (Helsinki, Finland) in 1978 and the Outstanding Young Scientist Award (Mathematics) from the National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) in 1982.

Throughout his teaching career, he has taught Math at all levels at the Ateneo de Manila, initiated the Program of Excellence in Mathematics (PEM) for mathematically gifted high school students, and acted as coach and leader of Philippine team to the International Mathematical Olympiad. He also spearheaded the establishment of the five-year BS-MS in Applied Mathematics Major in Mathematical Finance at the Ateneo de Manila University, and served as president of the Mathematical Society of the Philippines for two terms (1983-1989).

Dr. Soledad S. Reyes
Dr. Reyes graduated with an AB English Literature degree from Maryknoll College in 1966 and received her MA in Literature from the Ateneo de Manila University in 1971. She obtained her PhD in Philippine Studies from the University of the Philippines in 1979, and her MA in Sociology of Literature from Essex University, England in 1981. Reyes joined the Interdisciplinary Studies faculty of Ateneo as instructor in 1971 and never left since. In 1986, she earned full professor status at the university.

Students in the Philippines and abroad who are interested in learning more about Philippine culture and literature have benefited from Dr. Reyes’ expertise. In 1997, she was an exchange professor handling modules on Philippine literature and popular culture at Peking University. In 1992, she was among the delegates of the Ateneo to the Peking University-Ateneo de Manila University Exchange Program. In 1987, she engaged students of Xiamen University in China on a two-month series of lectures on Philippine literature, culture and history as part of the exchange program between the two universities.

Dr. Reyes has served the Ateneo in various capacities including editor of the "Loyola Schools Review" (Humanities) from 2001 up to the present. She is currently an active member of PEN International as well as the Writers’ Union of the Philippines (Unyon ng mga Manunulat ng Pilipinas – UMPIL). From 1987-1995, she served as board member of UMPIL.

Dr. Reyes is also a multi-awarded writer and author of books, the most recent of which are “From Darna to Zsazsa Zaturnnah: Desire and Fantasy and Other Way” (2009) “A Dark Tinge to the World: Selected Essays 1987-2005.”

Dr. Mari-Jo P. Ruiz
Dr. Ruiz received her doctorate in Mathematics in 1981 at the Ateneo de Manila. At the Courant Institute of the Mathematical Sciences of New York University, she earned a degree in MS Mathematics in 1965. Two years before, in 1963, she received her BA in Mathematics from Marymount Manhattan College. Graph Theory and Operations Research is her field of specialization.

She has served the Ateneo in various capacities. From 1965 up to the present, shehas been a Math professor at the School of Science and Engineering. She has been a member of the Board of Trustees since 2005. Other positions she has held were: School of Arts and Sciences dean from 1994-2000, Math Department chair from 1992-1994, Management Engineering Department chair (1981 to 1983, 1984 to 1987, 1989 to 1990) and Management Engineering Department acting chair from 1975 to 1976.

Throughout her career, she has served on the editorial board of various local and international journals, has published papers, textbooks and books, and has participated in national and international conferences and workshops. A number of prestigious companies and government offices have sought her research expertise, including the Department of Health, Software Ventures International Corporation, Colgate-Palmolive Philippines, Computer Information Systems, Inc., and Philippine Airlines.

Emeritus professors are selected on the basis of their distinguished academic record and university service. This title may be conferred upon professors who have reached the formal retirement age. But because of their distinction, they are encouraged to continue to render active service in the university in different capacities. They are likewise entrusted to help pass on the school's culture to the next generations of faculty and students.

On November 20, 2009, Friday, 4:00 p.m., the Ateneo community will come together to show their gratitude and appreciation for the three LS professors' contributions to the university. The ceremony will be held at the Escaler Hall, Science Education Complex (SEC), Ateneo Loyola Heights campus.

In 2010, the Institute of Mathematical Sciences, University of Malaya will be hosting the 6th East Asia SIAM (EASIAM) Conference in conjunction with the Applied Mathematics International Conference (AMIC2010) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The EASIAM Conference is an annual meeting in the series of conferences. EASIAM provides a platform for exploration and application of mathematics to science, industry, engineering and technology in the East and South East Asia. Previous EASIAM meetings were held in Hong Kong, Sapporo, Xiamen, Daejeon, and Brunei. EASIAM is a section of SIAM, Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM), which promotes research that will lead to effective new mathematical and computational methods and techniques for science, engineering, industry and society. It also provides media for the exchange of information and ideas among mathematicians, engineers, and scientists.

EASIAM Student Paper Prize:

Principal Guidelines
The EASIAM Student Paper Prizes are awarded every year to the student author(s) of the most outstanding paper(s) submitted to the EASIAM Student Paper Competition. This award is based solely on the merit and content of the student's contribution to the submitted paper.

The purpose of the Student Paper Prizes is to recognize an outstanding scholarship by students in applied mathematics or computing.

Requirements to enter the Competition
To enter the competition, each applicant
- must be a student of a country in the East or Southeast Asia;
- must not attend the oral defense longer than six months before the deadline of the competition submission;
- and must submit: a short vitae including his/her list of publications (at most two pages). The student's advisor must submit a letter that describes and evaluates the paper's contribution to the literature and the student's role in the publications.

Notification of Prize Winners
The EASIAM president will notify the recipient(s) around April 15. 2010.
Each recipient is required to present his or her paper at the EASIAM meeting where the prizes are awarded.

Description of the Award
Each recipient of the EASIAM Student Paper Prize shall receive a
certificate and reimbursement of up to US$250 toward travel expenses. Up to four awards will be awarded each year.

Call for Abstract

The User Forum is a key annual event organised by the Enabling Grids for E-sciencE (EGEE) project. The forum provides an important opportunity to scientific communities exploiting distributed infrastructure technologies, to present their work, discuss technology usage with colleagues, and learn about advances in middleware and application services.

The 5th EGEE User Forum will take place on 12-15 April 2010 in Uppsala, Sweden. The
event is organized in collaboration with the European Grid Initiative (EGI) and the Nordic DataGrid Facility (NDGF), and will be hosted by the Swedish National Infrastructure for Computing (SNIC), the Uppsala Multidisciplinary Center for Advanced Computational Science (UPPMAX) and PDC - Center for High Performance Computing at KTH. This year the User Forum marks the end of the EGEE series of projects and the transition to a sustainable European e-Infrastructure model led by EGI, the European Grid Initiative. UF5 will help pave the ground for this transition by expanding its focus to cover a broader scope of European e-infrastructures and distributed computing technologies, providing the opportunity for the first time to all the relevant users community to meet, interact and collaborate.

The scientific programme consists of daily plenary sessions featuring distinguished keynote speakers, followed by parallel sessions focusing on e-Infrastructure use within the various user disciplines, and also on specific supporting technologies. Sessions for demonstrations and posters will augment the oral programme, and provide a key element of the forum.

The programme committee invites abstracts for contributions in one of following general topics:
• Planned or on-going scientific work and results obtained using distributed computing technologies,• Data-intensive and data-oriented distributed applications,• Experiences from application porting and deployment of existing software in distributed computing environments,• Software services exploiting and/or extending grid middleware (gLite, ARC, UNICORE etc),• Programming environments,• End-user environments, scientific gateways and portal technologies,• Emerging technologies within the European distributed computing infrastructures (cloud, virtualization etc),• National and international activities and collaborations for share and exploitation of e-Infrastructures,• Support services and tools for user communities.

Contributions may be offered the possibility of either an oral presentation, a poster or a demonstration. The Programme Committee will assume responsibility for assigning proposed contributions to the various parts of the event. The demonstrations can follow any of the above topics and must have a strong requirement for a visual or interactive presentation. Contributors should make sure that enough people will register and attend the User Forum in order for the demonstration to be manned continuously during one of the two dedicated demo sessions planned for Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon.

The Programme Committee expects that submitted abstracts follow the pre-defined template provided online from the User Forum abstract submission and scientific program management system. This will facilitate the evaluation of the abstracts and the production of a "Book of Abstracts" summarizing the contributions. Abstracts must be submitted using the “Submit a new abstract page” under the Call for Abstracts section in the above link. In the submission template it should be indicated whether an oral submission could be placed as a poster if required and who among the authors will be responsible for giving the presentation. Precise information will be provided for the preparation of oral presentations, posters and demonstrations. Prospective authors should read the “Author Instructions” section which provides important information regarding abstract submission. Abstracts submitted via other means (email, etc.) or after the submission deadline will not be taken into consideration. Any enquiries regarding abstract submission should be forwarded to the Programme Committee chair.

Notification of acceptance: 15th of January

It's my birthday today.

It's time for me to pause and reflect.

Have I done more good things than bad ones?

Have I made positive contributions to society and humankind?

Did I strive for excellence and service?

Did I make other people happy or sad?

Did I contribute to environmental protection or did I contribute to environmental degradation?

Did I contribute to the development of my country and people?

Have I been good to my parents and loved ones?

What are the things that I need to improve?

What are the bad habits that I need take out of my system?

Did I use my talents to improve the lives of other people?

Have I been true to myself and to other people?

Have I been a good servant of God?

Another year... another year older... and hopefully, another year wiser.

I thank all loved ones, relatives, friends, colleagues, and everyone who remember me on this special day.

I pray for humility, honesty, sincerity, faith, hope, and charity.

6. Class Policies

6.1. Cellular phones shall be turned off during class hours.

6.2. Maximum number of absences is 9 hours.

6.3. The teacher may send anyone out of the classroom due to discourtesy
to the teacher or to a fellow student, misbehavior in
the classroom, and other reasons found in the Student Handbook.

6.4. A student who misses an exam may be given a make-up exam
depending on the student’s reason(s), and upon the Department
Chairperson’s approval. Make-up exams are more difficult
than the regular exam.

6.5. Any form of cheating is not allowed. Refer to the Student Handbook
for details.

6.6. Use bond paper in all tests. Do not use pencil in all tests. No

From the Ateneo Blueboard (11/9/09):

ACM International Programming Contest Held in Ateneo;
Local Team is 3rd Place in National Division

A team from Ateneo de Manila University won 3rd Place in the national
level during the ACM International Programming Contest (ICPC)
Asia-Manila Regional held recently.

Team 'LCD ver. 2' composed of fourth year BS Computer Science students
-- Melody Kay Carolino, Thomas Dy, and Juan Rafael Liban -- solved 8
out 10 problems during the international programming contest hosted by
Ateneo de Manila University last October 22 - 23, 2009. The team
ranked 8th in the international level and 3rd in the national level.
The team's coach is Dr. Proceso Fernandez, Jr., a faculty member of
the Department of Information Systems and Computer Science (DISCS).

Another team from ADMU, Team 'Bandwagon of Institutional R.' composed
of BS CS students -- Nikolai Andrei Banasihan, James Andrew Choa, and
Wilhensen Joseph Li -- ranked 9th place in the international level and
4th place in the national level. The team's coach is David Diy, a
faculty member of DISCS.

55 teams from 4 countries and 23 schools in Asia participated in the
ACM ICPC Asia Manila Regional competition held on October 22 - 23,
2009 in Ateneo de Manila University, with IBM as event sponsor.

Team "Mga SOGO ni E.T." from the University of the Philippines-Diliman
solved 10 out of 10 problems and was declared Champion in both the
international and national levels. The first runner-up in the
international level is Team 'Passion' from Ho Chi Minh City University
of Science, Vietnam while second runner-up is Team 'NUSSOC1' from the
National University of Singapore. Another team from U.P. Diliman, Team
'SOGOng long moy poso' got 2nd Place in the national level.

ACM stands for Association for Computing Machineries, one of the most
prestigious I.T. organizations in the world. Each year, ACM holds the
ICPC participated by thousands of teams from hundreds of universities
worldwide. From selected regional sites in 6 continents, winning teams
advance to the World Finals. The ACM ICPC World Finals will be held on
Feb 1 - 6, 2010 in Harbin, China.

The ACM ICPC is a team competition consisting of 3 collegiate students
and a coach. Each team is given a set of programming tasks (from 8 to
10 problems) to be solved in 5 hours using a standard computer and
programming languages such as C, C++, and Java.

This is the first time that a team from the Philippines has won an ACM
ICPC Asia Regional competition and the third time that a Philippine
Team has advanced to the ACM ICPC World Finals. In 2005 and 2006,
programming teams from Ateneo de Manila University competed in the ACM
ICPC World Finals.

Also, this is the third time that Ateneo de Manila University has
hosted an ACM Asia Regional Competition.

This year's Asia Manila contest director is Dr. Rafael Saldaña,
faculty member of the Mathematics Department of ADMU. The members of

The ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) traces its
roots to a competition held at Texas A&M in 1970 hosted by the Alpha
Chapter of the UPE Computer Science Honor Society. The idea quickly
gained popularity within the United States and Canada as an innovative
initiative to assist in the development of top students in the field
of computer science.

The contest evolved into a multi-tier competition with the first
Finals held at the ACM Computer Science Conference in 1977.
Headquartered at Baylor University since the 1980s, the contest has
expanded into a global network of universities hosting regional
competitions that advance teams to the World Finals.

Since IBM became sponsor in 1997, the contest has increased by a
several factors. Participation has grown to involve several tens of
thousands of the finest students and faculty in computing disciplines
at over 1,600 universities from more than 70 countries on six
continents.

The contest fosters creativity, teamwork, and innovation in building
new software programs, and enables students to test their ability to
perform under pressure. It is the oldest, largest, and most
prestigious programming contest in the world.

The organizers of the ACM ICPC Asia Manila 2009 congratulate all
winners and participants and would like to thank the faculty, staff
and student volunteers from DISCS, Mathematics Department, and the
Electronics, Communications and Computer Engineering (ECCE) Department
who made this year's contest a success.

Course Title : Applied Calculus for Life Sciences I

A. Course Description

Ma 20.3a is the first in a series of two 3-unit calculus courses taken primarily by majors in the life sciences. The course introduces the student to differential calculus and its applications such as rate of change, related rates, graphing, and optimization. There is strong emphasis on applications to life sciences. Topics include limits and continuity, derivatives, differentials and applications of the derivative.

B. Specific Objectives

At the end of the course, the student is expected to be able to:

1. Have an intuitive notion of the concepts of limit and continuity of a function; apply the limit theorems and obtain the asymptotes of a function.

2. Find the derivative of algebraic, exponential and logarithmic functions; interpret the derivative as a measure of slope and as a rate of change; use derivatives as an aid in sketching the graph of a function and to solve optimization problems.

E. Course Requirements and Grading System:

The final mark of the student will be based principally on the following: 3 long exams (100 pts. each- no cancellation), the final exam (200 pts.), and (optional) quizzes/assignments/ recitation (maximum of 100 pts). All exams will be departmental.

U.P. Wins International Collegiate Programming Contest

A team from the University of the Philippines-Diliman won first place in the 2009 ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) Asia-Manila Regional Competition held recently at the Ateneo de Manila University, Quezon City, Philippines with IBM as the event sponsor.

Team "Mga SOGO ni E.T." solved 10 out of 10 problems to emerge as the Champion. The team consists of Kevin Charles Atienza, 3 BS Computer Science; John Eddie Ayson, 3 BS Computer Engineering; and Marte Raphael Soliza, 5 BS Computer Science. Their coach representative is Mr. Eric Tambasacan.

The first runner-up is Team 'Passion' from Ho Chi Minh City University of Science, Vietnam. Members of the team are as follows: Pham Tuan Vu, rinh Tran Dang Khoa, and Le Do Hoan Nam. Their coach is Dang Nguyen Tien.

The second runner-up is Team 'NUSSOC1' from the National University of Singapore. Team members are Victor Loh Bo Huai, Adhiraj Somani, and Doon Hanh Hung. Their coach is Steven Halim.

ACM stands for Association for Computing Machineries, one of the most prestigious I.T. organization in the world. Each year, ACM holds the ICPC participated by thousands of teams from hundreds of universities worldwide. From selected regional sites in 6 continents, winning teams advance to the World Finals. The ACM ICPC World Finals will be held on Feb 1 - 6, 2010 in Harbin, China.

The ACM ICPC is a team competition consisting of 3 collegiate students and a coach. Each team is given a set of programming tasks (from 8 to 10 problems) to be solved in 5 hours using a standard computer and programming languages such as C, C++, and Java.

55 teams from 4 countries and 23 schools participated in the ACM ICPC Asia Manila Regional held October 22 - 23, 2009 in Ateneo de Manila University, Quezon City, Philippines.

This was the first time that a team from the Philippines has won an ACM ICPC Asia Regional competition and the third time that Philippine Team advanced to an ACM ICPC World Finals.

Also, this was the third time that Ateneo de Manila University hosted an ACM Asia Regional Competition.

This year's Asia Manila contest director was Dr. Rafael Saldaña of Ateneo de Manila University. The members of the Board of Judges, from the Computing Society of the Philippines (CSP), were the following:

The ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) traces its roots to a competition held at Texas A&M in 1970 hosted by the Alpha Chapter of the UPE Computer Science Honor Society. The idea quickly gained popularity within the United States and Canada as an innovative initiative to assist in the development of top students in the emerging field of computer science.

The contest evolved into a multi-tier competition with the first Finals held at the ACM Computer Science Conference in 1977. Headquartered at Baylor University since the 1980s, the contest has expanded into a global network of universities hosting regional competitions that advance teams to the World Finals.

Since IBM became sponsor in 1997, the contest has increased by a several factors. Participation has grown to involve several tens of thousands of the finest students and faculty in computing disciplines at over 1,600 universities from more than 70 countries on six continents.

The contest fosters creativity, teamwork, and innovation in building new software programs, and enables students to test their ability to perform under pressure. It is the oldest, largest, and most prestigious programming contest in the world.

Problem D: ‘Composition of Polynomials’

Given two polynomials, p(x) of degree M, and q(x) of degree N, both with integer coefficients, your problem is to write a computer program that prints the coefficients of the composition polynomial f(x) = p(q(x)).

For example, if p(x) = 2x^3 + 5x – 4 and q(x) = 3x^2 – 4x + 1, then f(x) = p(q(x)) = 2(3x^2 – 4x + 1)^3 + 5( 3x^2 – 4x + 1) – 4 = 54x^6 – 216x^5 + 342x^4 – 272x^3 + 129x^2 – 44x + 3

INPUT. Input shall consist of several data sets. Each data set will be given in three lines of input. The first line will give the values of M and N, separated by one or more spaces. The second line will give the coefficients of each term of p(x), separated by one or more spaces, and arranged in increasing powers of x. The third line will give the coefficients of each term of q(x), separated by one or more spaces, and arranged in increasing powers of x. Both M and N will be between 0 and 10, inclusive. Each coefficient will be small, in the range -20 to 20 inclusive, but a small value raised to 10th power is not guaranteed to be a small integer. Input for the next data set will immediately follow that of the previous data set. An input of M = 0 and N = 0 will signify the end of input data.

A string is a palindrome if it reads the same whether read forward or backward. For example, “MaDaM” and “1234554321” are palindromes, while “APPLE”, “00110”, and “mADam” are not palindromes.

Non-palindromes, however, may also contain palindromes. For example, the longest palindrome in “APPLE” is “PP”, the longest palindrome in “00110” is “0110”, and the longest palindrome in “Philippines” is “ippi”.

Input

The file consists of several test cases, each with a case number and the test case. A test case specifies a string with length 2 up to 100.

Output

For each test case, output the length of the longest palindrome in the string. Note that non-letters and non-digits are considered in searching for palindromes in the string, but are eventually not counted in the length of the longest palindrome.

An n x m matrix can be filled by consecutive numbers starting from a number p, in a diagonal fashion starting at the upper right corner. For example, the 4 x 7 matrix below is filled up by numbers starting from 4.

From the matrix, the sum of the elements covered by the region specified by indices (x1, y1) and (x2, y2) can be computed. For example, the sum of the elements covered by the region specified by index (1, 2) to index (2, 4) is 106 (because 21 + 14 + 13 + 23 + 20 + 15 = 106).

Input

The file consists of several test cases, each with a case number and the test case. A test case specifies the dimensions n and m of the matrix (where 0 <> 0, and x1 <= x2 and y1 <= y2). Output

For each test case, output the sum of the elements in the specified region.

The recent rise in the number of people contracting the flu virus had led to the study on its spread pattern. Given a population of N people in a community, there will be some people who are naturally immune from the flu virus and there are those who are not. Depending on the movement of the person, he or she also has a varying radius of transmission as represented by circles in Figure 1. However, we shall assume that each person can only be infected at center of his/her area. Figure 1 illustrates the spread of the flu virus after 4 transmissions. The first infected person is labeled with a value of 0, infecting 2, 2, 1 and 1 person, respectively, for each transmission.

The flu virus is eventually contained at this point in time. We shall assume the center point of all people will remain the same.

Input
The input consists of multiple test cases. Each test case starts with a line containing an integer N (1 ≤ N ≤ 30) indicating the number of people in the population. Starting on the next line are 3-tuple data (x y r) representing the persons x, y coordinates and r radius of transmission. Each 3-tuple data are space delimited. Persons who are immune to the flu virus have a radius of 0. The first entry in each test case is the first person affected with the flu virus. The last test case is followed by a line containing a single zero. The coordinate system sets the origin in the top left corner of the entire area. The variables x and y are positive integers not exceeding 200. The variable r is a non-negative integer not exceeding 200.

Output

For each test case, print the case number (starting with 1) followed by the number of transmission before the flu virus is eventually contained.

Problem C: ‘Minimal Bounding Rectangle’

Given N points on the plane, namely, (x[0],y[0]), (x[1],y[1]), . . . , (x[N-1],y{N-1]), a divider line is one that passes through two of these points such that all the N points are on one side of the line or on the line itself. Given any divider line L(P, P') that passes through the two points P and P', a unique bounding rectangle R(P, P') of minimal area can be found that contains all the N points inside the rectangle or on its sides, such that one side of R(P, P') is on L(P, P'). You problem is to write a computer program that will determine all such bounding rectangles of minimal area such that one side is on a divider line, and report the the smallest area among all such rectangles.

For example, given the six points A(0,0), B(0,2), C(1,1), D(2,2), E(3,1), and F(4,0). The divider line passing through AB defines a bounding rectangle of minimal area 8 square units. The divider line passing through AF defines a bounding rectangle of minimal area 8 square units. The divider line passing though DF defines a bounding rectangle of minimal area 12 square units. Finally the divider line passing through BD defines a bounding rectangle of minimal area 8 square units. Thus the bounding rectangle of smallest area has 8 square units.

INPUT.
Input shall consist of several data sets. Each data set will be given in several lines. The first line of the data set will contain the value of N. This will be followed by N lines, each line containing the x and y coordinates of one point, separated by spaces. The value of N will not exceed 500. The coordinates x and y will be integers not exceeding 1000 in absolute value. Data for the next data set will immediately follow the data for the previous data set. An input value of N = 0 signifies the end of input.

OUTPUT.

Problem B: ‘Typhoon Ondoy’

On September 26, 2009, Typhoon Ondoy brought a month's worth of rainfall to Metro Manila and nearby areas in just a few hours, causing severe flooding which resulted in the loss of many lives and the displacement of hundreds of thousands of people.
Areas under Storm Signal No. 2 included: Aurora, Quirino, Nueva Vizcaya, Nueva Ecija, Pangasinan, Tarlac, Zambales, Pampanga, Bulacan, Rizal, Northern Quezon, and Polillo Island.
Under Storm Signal No. 1 were: Isabela, Mountain Province, Ifugao, Benguet, La Union, Ilocos Sur, the rest of Quezon, Laguna, Cavite, Batangas, Mindoro provinces, Lubang Island, Marinduque, Camarines Norte, Bataan, and Metro Manila.
The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAG-ASA) has come up with a measure to classify typhoons based on wind speed (in kph):
Tropical depressions have wind speeds of 30 to 46 kph (inclusive).
Tropical storms have wind speeds between 47 kph and 89 kph (inclusive).
Typhoons have wind speeds between 90 kph and 183 kph (inclusive).
Super typhoons have wind speeds greater than 183 kph.

TASK: Given a file containing wind speeds (in integer format, ranging from 1 to 255) your task is to produce a computer program that will display the type of typhoon based on wind speed. If the wind speed is between 1 and 29 kph (inclusive) then display the message “No classification”.

Problem A: ‘Time Lapse Camera’

Henry has a time lapse camera that can take a set of 3 images in one shot. The three images are taken by the camera at different time lapse. For example, if the first image is taken at 0.33 seconds after the shot, then the second image is automatically taken at 0.51 seconds and the third image is taken at 0.62 seconds after the shot. The time lapses of taking the images are not reliable but the spatial coordinate (x, y) between images remain the same due to high speed shutter.

One nice evening during a sport festival, Henry placed a grid net in front of camera and started shooting the movement of a ball. Once the images were developed, Henry measured and recorded the coordinates of the ball on each image. Now he wants to know the highest height that the ball had achieved in a set of 3 images.

You need to help Henry by writing a program to compute the approximation of height that the ball has achieved in each set of images by assuming that the movement of the ball forms a parabolic curve.

Input

A test case consists of the coordinate of 3 points where the ball was captured by the camera. Input consists of several test cases. Each coordinate will not exceed 500.0 in absolute value. The input is terminated by a zero on a line by itself.

Output

Approximation of highest height that the ball has achieved in each test case

It’s objective of bringing together bright and talented young people from different countries to take part in a grueling friendly competition, like a mental Olympiad, is quite noble.
