Note: This is an experiment. I wonder if my blog hit counter would dramatically increase if I feature a celebrity Ateanean like Chris Tiu (famous varsity basketball player of Ateneo) in my blog :)

Anyway, Chris (fullname: Christopher John A. Tiu) deserves to be congratulated because he won the 2008 Ateneo Sportsman of the Year Award (together with Patrick Ozaeta, a football player).

I also found out that Chris Tiu is a double major: Management and Applied Mathematics Major in Mathematical Finance :)

Aside from Chris Tiu, the other winners in the Loyola Schools Awards for Sports are:

NOTE: Tonight (3/10/08) I attended the 2008 Loyola Schools Awards for Leadership and Service (of Ateneo de Manila University) held at 5:00 p.m. onwards at the M. V. Pangilinan Roofdeck, Ateneo de Manila University.

Included in the event are the COA Awards, the LS Awards for Sports and the ASCEND Awards.

I am glad to report that my student and thesis advisee, Mr. Timothy "TJ" James Yusun (4 BS Mathematics) won two awards: (1) A Special Citation for our research paper on "Philippine Landslide Dynamics: A Mathematical and Computational Study Using Cellular Automata and the Minimization Algorithm" and (2) Most Outstanding Student Group for Alay ni Ignacio (ANI).

A few days ago, TJ won the 2008 BPI-DOST Science Award (again, for our research paper on Philippine Landslide Dynamics).


Below is the text of my introduction to TJ before he received his special citation:

"On February 2006, the village of Guinsaugon in the province of Southern Leyte (Philippines) was hit by two devastating landslides -- first at 10 am, then another at 10 pm -- all on the same day. Houses and schools were buried in the mud and debris along with hundreds of people, causing countries and organizations from all over the world to assist in the relief and rehabilitation efforts.

In a country such as ours, the study which is the recipient of this award, becomes very relevant because it addresses one of the perennial environmental disasters in the Philippines -- landslides.

Working with environmental researchers, my student, Timothy James Lee Yusun, came upo with a study that displays an excellent mastery of the use of mathematics and information technology in understanding landslide dynamics, producing presumably the first serious study on the selected methodology in addressing this serious environmental threat in our country.

Overall, this study is truly remarkable because it demonstrated that seemingly abstract disciplines like mathematics and computing are indeed relevant as tools in national development.

In cooperation with the Manila Observatory (of Ateneo de Manila University) and the Department of Science and Technology, Mr. Timothy Yusn's work will in fact be used as basis for further collaboration with scientists and researchers within the relevant agencies of the Department of Science and Technology and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.

I am very proud to call to the stage Mr. Timothy James Lee Yusn form the Mathematics Department for his excellent work in the study entitled "Philippine Landslide Dynamics: A Mathematical and Computational Study Using Celllular Automata and the Minimization Algorithm."

TJ was accompanied by his mother and his sister. Fr. Ben Nebres, SJ, Ateneo de Manila University President; Dr. Ma. Assunta Cuyegkeng, Vice-President for Loyola Schools; Dr. Fabian Dayrit, Dean of the School of Science and Engineering; and Dr. Reginald Marcelo, Chairperson of the Mathematics Department, were among those who congratulated TJ.

Education: Saldaña formally installed as PSHS Director


In a simple yet warm ceremony, Dr. Rafael Saldaña was formally installed as Philippine Science High School(PSHS) Main Campus Director on 28 February 2003 at the PSHS Auditorium in Diliman, Quezon City.

Saldaña, also an alumnus of the PSHS (Batch 1977), started guidingthe country’s leading science high school on 21 November 2002, exactly 100 days prior to his formal installation. Saldaña sworn in together with Department of Scienceand Technology (DoST) and PSHS Chairman of Board ofTrustees Dr. Estrella F. Alabastro and PSHS System Executive Director Dr. Ramon R. Miranda.

In his speech, Saldaña summarized his plans and vision for the campus following the acronym BE CREATIVE. It stands for:

Basic Curriculum enhancement;
E-science and e-learning;
Creative and proactive leadership;
REsearch in Mathematics, science and technology;
commitment to PSHS;
Application of information technology in education;
Teaching competency for student-centered learning;
Improvementof infrastructure and internet connectivity;
Values formation; and
Ecological Awareness.

Saldaña earned his doctor’s degree in mathematical and computational biophysics from Monash University in Australia. He is also a recipient of several awards and citations that include 1997 National Academy of Science and Technology’s Outstanding Published Paper Award and 2001 Dean’s Award for Outstanding Faculty in Research at the Ateneo de Manila University.

The Quad Prize, to be awarded in coordination with the Automata-2008 workshop, wants to encourage filling a gap in our imagination of the simplest models of computation, and will be awarded to the first submission that will either exhibit a computation-universal 2-state cellular automaton on a 2-dimensional, 2x2-neighborhood -- or on the contrary prove that none exist within that class. Later, I was introduced formally into the wonderful world of cellular automata by Prof. Luis Casasus of the Universidad Politecnica de Madrid, Spain in 1995. International Summer School on Grid Computing (Hungary)

ANNOUNCEMENT


The sixth in the highly successful series of International Summer Schools on Grid Computing will be held at the Hotel Füred Conference and Congress Centre of Balatonfüred, Hungary, from 6th to 18th July 2008.

The School will include lectures, discussions, laboratory sessions, tutorials and group work delivered by leading authorities in the fields of advanced grid technology, applications of e-Science and distributed systems research. Reports from world leaders in deploying and exploiting Grids will complement lectures from research leaders shaping future e-Infrastructure.

Hands-on laboratory exercises will give students experience with widely used Grid middleware. The school will conclude with an integrating practical that will enable students, working in teams, to bring together all they have learnt on an extended exercise that simulates collaborative research using e-Infrastructures. Indeed during the school, participants will meet like-minded students from many parts of the world, working in many disciplines, and form valuable long-term working relationships.

We invite applications from enthusiastic and ambitious researchers who have recently started or are about to start working on Grid projects. Students may come from any country. We expect participants from computer science, computational science and any application discipline. The School will assume that students have diverse backgrounds and build on that diversity. The event will consist of two parts:

1. Seminar on Computer Programming Competitions for High School Teachers/Coaches and Students.

2. Informatics Olympiad (Programming Competition) for High School Students.

This is an individual contestopen to all high school students from second year tof ourth year levels. Students may use either C, C++, or JAVA. The top three winners will receive special prizes. The top 25 participating students in PNOI 2008 will be eligible to compete in the 2nd Asia-Pacific Informatics Olympiad (APIO) scheduled on May 10, 2008. The registration fee for teachers/coaches is PhP 500 while the fee for students is PhP 300. The fee includes light snacks, lunch, and certificate of participation.

Last Wednesday, 3/5/08, my student and thesis advisee, Timothy James Yusun, 4-BS Mathematics major, received the 2008 BPI-DOST Science Award together with two other winners from the School of Science and Engineering of Ateneo de Manila University.

"The Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) believes that science, research and technology development are essential components in nation building. In institutionalizing BPI-DOST Science Awards, the BPI Foundation aims to encourage budding scientists and researchers to scale higher levels of excellence in their chosen fields."

Each year, three exceptional students from leading universities and colleges from the Philippines are selected for their achievements in their respective fields. The awards are given to the top three junior and senior students of the following universities: Ateneo de Davao University, Ateneo de Manila University, De La Salle University, Silliman University, Saint Louis University, University of the Philippines (Diliman and Los Baños), University of San Carlos, University of Santo Tomas, and Xavier University.

The awardees from Ateneo de Manila University presented their research papers on March 5, 2008 in Escaler Hall at 3:00 p.m.
