TO ALL INTERESTED Science and Engineering faculty and students of Ateneo de Manila University:
Greetings.
I would like to invite you to paticipate in an interdisciplinary colloqium/seminar series on "Computational and Informatics Aspects of Cancer."
The colloquium/seminar series is scheduled every Monday, 4:30 - 5:30 p.m. in SEC 303A during the first semester of SY 2008-2009.
The aim of this colloquium/seminar series is to develop an interdisciplinary research group in the School of Science and Engineering that will include the following computational and informatics aspects of cancer research: algorithms, databases, data mining, computer aided diagnosis, e-learning, expert systems, modeling & simulation, ontology, applied mathematics, bioinformatics, computational biophysics, systems biology, visualization, high performance computing and Grid technology applications.
At present the group consists of some undergraduate & graduate students and faculty members under the following departments: Mathematics; Information Systems and Computer Science (DISCS); and Electronics, Commmunications, and Computer Engineering (ECCE). The group also aims to pursue collaboration with other disciplines and with medical practitioners in the Medical City Cancer Center and other cancer institutes.
Current research projects involved in the group are as follows:
1. Ontology for breast cancer
2. Developing an expert system for breast cancer risk analysis
3. Data mining algorithms for breast cancer diagnosis
4. Content-based image retrieval (CBIR) of digital mammograms using Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI)
5. Modeling and simulation of tumor growth using cellular automata
6. Grid-based retrieval and analysis of digital mammograms.
The group is linked with two international projects including:
1. ONCO-MEDIA project (http://www.onco-media.com/) (funded by the French government's ICT-Asia regional program)
2. EUAsiaGrid project (http://www.euasiagrid.org/) (funded by the European Commission FP7 program)
The group will also utilize the Medgrid/Agila high performance computing cluster facility of the School of Science and Engineering.
I would also like to invite experts among you who are interested to provide inputs in the cellular, biochemical, medical, environmental and othe aspects of cancer research. Science and engineering students who are looking for thesis topics in the field of biomedical computing and informatics are also welcome to attend the colloquium/seminar series.

Adding value to data - Digital Repositories in the e-Science world

An Initiative of DReSNet: Digital Repositories in e-Science Network (http://www.dresnet.net)
There is a great, untapped potential for synergies between grid/e-science technologies and a cluster of related systems addressing the management of digital assets in digital libraries and repositories.
The digital material generated from and used by academic and other research is to an increasing extent being held in formal data management systems; these systems are variously categorized as digital repositories, libraries or archives, although the distinction between them relates more to the sort of data that they contain and the use towhich the data is put, rather than to any major difference infunctionality.
Modern repository systems allow us to move away from the model of a stand-alone repository, library or archive, where objects aresimply deposited for subsequent access and download. Instead,researchers are developing more sophisticated models in which these containers of data are integrated components of a larger e-Science research infrastructure, incorporating advanced tools and workflows, and are being used to model complex webs of information and capture scholarly or scientific processes in their entirety, from raw data through to final publications.
Repositories have been successfully combined with data grid technologies, and in addition computational grids seem to offer possible applications in digital preservation and curation, such as automatic metadata extraction and index creation.
These systems thus could add value to the data-driven research life cycle in e-Science.

Invitation: Prof. Miriam Coronel-Ferrer's Special Lecture on Peace

U.P. Centennial Thematic Lecture on Peace
TO ALL CONCERNED:
Please join Prof. Miriam Coronel-Ferrer in the public forum featuring the UP Centennial Thematic Lecture on Peace on Wednesday, July 2, 2008, 2:30- 4:00 p.m. in NISMED, UP Diliman, Quezon City.
On this occasion, Prof. Coronel-Ferrer will explore the theme “Peace ngayon, war bukas, pwede ba yon? The Constitutional Imperative to Pursue Peace.”
Instead of a straight lecture or a panel of presenters, Prof. Coronel-Ferrer has prepared a video documentary that will examine how and to what extent the 1987 Philippine Constitution compels the political leadership and Congress to renounce war, and pursue a policy of peace through peaceful means. The multi-media presentation will include interviews with former Constitutional Commissioners, and dramatized excerpts from the actual proceedings of the 1986 Constitutional Commission. I am putting these together with the able help of production director Tootoots Leyesa of the Dakila artists’ group.
Among the controversial questions that will be addressed are:
· How should the “renunciation of war, adoption of the principles of international law and adherence to a policy of peace, justice, etc.” provision and other relevant provisions guide executive policy-making and law-making?
· Did support for the US-led global war against terror and an “all-out war” policy against the Moro and communist armed groups constitute culpable violations of the Constitution?
· Is there a “constitutional imperative” to pursue peace?
The thematic lecture is one of only seven thematic lectures included in the 2008 UP Centennial Thematic Lecture series. The others themes are women/gender, global warming, poverty alleviation, the state of the nation’s health, the state of Philippine education and indigenous peoples. UP President Roman added peace upon the suggestion of former UP president and now senator Edgardo Angara.
The Thematic Lecture on Peace will be held at the NISMED Auditorium, UP Diliman. It will be webcasted in real time in all seven UP campuses. Through vide-conferencing, guests present in all these venues may field questions and comments during the open forum.

22 journals are now available on the new Philippines Journals Online website, following The Philippines Journals Online (PhilJOL) Publishing Quality and Online Strategy Workshop which was held at Ateneo de Manila University, Manila, the Philippines on May 21-23 2008.
The workshop was held in collaboration with the Philippine Association of Scholarly and Academic Publishers (PASAP), National Book Development Board (NBDB), Ateneo De Manila University, De La Salle University Manila, C&E Publishing, and Asia Pacific College and was attended by more than 25 journal editors and journal representatives.
The participants were trained in loading content on to the PhilJOL website http://www.philjol.info/ and were introduced to the peer review system used on the website and online publishing strategy.

1. Boardwork (on an assigned problem given last 6/16/08) on finding the limits of a function using the graphical method.
2. Graded Seatwork No. 1 (8 pts). Given a function f(x) find the limit of f(x) using the graphical method.
Given: f(x) = ((absolute value of (x + 3)) - 1)/(x - 1)
a. Find the limit of f(x) as x approaches -1.
b. Find the limit of f(x) as x approaches 0.
c. Find the limit of f(x) as x approacher 1.
3. Discussed the Properties of Limits (Theorem 1) (See Barnett et al., p. 153)

3. Went to my additional subjects, AMC 124 (Discrete Mathematics for Computer Science) in Rm. SEC A214; but my students did not arrive. I was told later that there was a confusion about the room assignment. My students went to a different room located in Faura Bldg.
4. Had a phone conference (3 - 4 p.m.) via Skype with EUAsiaGrid partners (http://www.euasiagrid.org/) involved in WP5 (training). Topic: preparation for the July grid computing workshop in Malaysia.
5. Had a short meeting with Dr. Fabian Dayrit (dean, School of Science and Engineering) regarding the cluster system administration.

4. The teacher may send anyone out of the classroom due to discourtesy to the teacher or to a fellow student, misbehavior in the classroom, and other reasons found in the Student Handbook.
5. No makeup assignment, seatwork, quiz or lab exercise (ASQL) will be given. Any missed ASQL will automatically mean a 0 for that ASQL.
6. A make-up test or exam may be given. The decision whether to allow a student to take a make-up test/exam depends on the student’s reason/s and the Department Chair’s approval. Make-up tests/exams are more difficult than those taken by the majority.
7. Any form of cheating is not allowed. Refer to the Student Handbook for details.
8. Use bond paper in all tests/exams. Do not use pencil in all tests/exams. No borrowing and/or lending of calculators.
9. Partial points given by the teacher are NOT negotiable.
10. A student with an average of 90% based on the 4 long tests may be exempted from taking the final exam.
