Queueing for Ateneo - La Salle Basketball Finals Tickets

.
Note: After waiting in line for almost six hours I got my two tickets :)

Yesterday (23 September 2008) I did something that I had never done before -- to queue for a basketball game ticket.

It is the UAAP (University Atheletics Association of the Philippines) Basketball Season Finals and the two contending teams are Ateneo de Manila University and De La Salle University. Game one (best of three games) was won by Ateneo last Sunday, September 21 (with a 69 - 61 win over La Salle).

I have never watched a basketball game live in Araneta Coliseum (venue of the UAAP Basketball Finals) before. Now that Ateneo is a strong contender in clinching the basketball championship this year, I decided to line up for tickets (reserved for faculty and staff of Ateneo).

Although the ticket distribution opened only at 12:00 noon, several people started lining up as early as 4:30 a.m. I arrived in the ticket place around 6:30 a.m. and I was number 22 in the queue.

The first 12 people in the queue were allocated with Upper A tickets. I got two Upper B tickets.

While waiting for the ticket office to open I was able to check several batches of exam papers.

Related Link: Queueing Theory (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queuing_theory)

"Queueing theory is the mathematical study of waiting lines (or queues). The theory enables mathematical analysis of several related processes, including arriving at the (back of the) queue, waiting in the queue (essentially a storage process), and being served by the server(s) at the front of the queue. The theory permits the derivation and calculation of several performance measures including the average waiting time in the queue or the system, the expected number waiting or receiving service and the probability of encountering the system in certain states, such as empty, full, having an available server or having to wait a certain time to be served."

Katipunan Traffic: The Rain Factor

Source: http://www.ateneo.edu/index.php?p=120&type=2&sec=26&aid=5814

From the Ateneo Blueboard:

Heavy rain starting at 6:35 p.m. last Thursday night, 18 September flooded the northbound lane of Katipunan under the Gate 2.5 footbridge and blocked traffic.

Northbound vehicles slowed down before the footbridge. Some vehicles going through the flooded section up to Gate 2.5. Vehicles stopped as water got deeper.
Traffic build-up extended all the way to the south side of flyover & beyond.

Northbound vehicles were forced to take inner lanes to avoid flooded section. MMDA personnel allowed center barriers to be opened for U-turn before footbridge. Concrete barriers were opened by drivers.

The Future of Online Video (According to Chad Hurley, Founder of YouTube)

.
Official Google Blog: The future of online video

THE FUTURE OF ONLINE VIDEO

By Chad Hurley, CEO and Co-Founder of YouTube

Ten years ago the world of online video was little more than an idea. It was used mostly by professionals like doctors or lawyers in limited and closed settings. Connections were slow, bandwidth was limited, and video gear was expensive and bulky. There were many false starts and outlandish promises over the years about the emergence of online video. It was really the dynamic growth of the Internet (in terms of adoption, speed and ubiquity) that helped to spur the idea that online video - millions of people around the world shooting it, uploading it, viewing it via broadband - was even possible.

Today, there are thousands of different video sites and services. In fact it's getting to be unusual not to find a video component on a news, entertainment or information website. And in less than three years, YouTube has united hundreds of millions of people who create, share, and watch video online.

What used to be a gap between "professional" entertainment companies and home movie buffs has disappeared. Everyone from major broadcasters and networks to vloggers and grandmas are taking to video to capture events, memories, stories, and much more in real time.Today, 13 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube every minute, and we believe the volume will continue to grow exponentially. Our goal is to allow every person on the planet to participate by making the upload process as simple as placing a phone call. This new video content will be available on any screen - in your living room, or on your device in your pocket.

YouTube and other sites will bring together all the diverse media which matters to you, from videos of family and friends to news, music, sports, cooking and much, much more.In ten years, we believe that online video broadcasting will be the most ubiquitous and accessible form of communication. The tools for video recording will continue to become smaller and more affordable.

Personal media devices will be universal and interconnected. Even more people will have the opportunity to record and share even more video with a small group of friends or everyone around the world.

Over the next decade, people will be at the center of their video and media experience. More and more consumers will become creators. We will continue to help give people unlimited options and access to information, and the world will be a smaller place.

The Mathitudes

. Poster source: http://www.mathteacherstore.com/middle/midlpost/5-8/180130main.htm
Note: A clever mathematical adaptation of the Beatitudes (New Testament Bible) is the "Mathitudes". I first saw this adaptation in a mathematics classroom in Punahou School, Honolulu, Hawaii in 2003 while I was attending a fellowship training on e-learning.

THE MATHITUDES

Blessed are the mathematical in spirit, for they shall see patterns and relationships.

Blessed are those who mourn over their peer results in math, for they shall be tutored.

Blessed are the mathematically meek, for they shall gain confidence with practice.

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after mathematical knowledge, for they shall be filled.

Blessed are the slow and unsteady in computation for their calculators shall comfort them.

Blessed are the logical, for they shall see the beauty of proof.

Blessed are those who prepare for their math tests, for success will be theirs.

Blessed are the rational, for they shall understand fractions.

Blessed are those who do their math homework regularly, for they shall learn the most.

Rejoice in the study of mathematics for great will be your reward in life.

A Moment in my Discrete Mathematics Class (AMC 124)

.

Photos taken by Migs Andres (http://blackmemories.multiply.com/photos/album/154/College_Capers?replies_read=20)

A few days ago I went to my Discrete Mathematics class (AMC 124) not feeling well. I was sick and very tired. So most of the time I was sitting while giving a lecture (normally I always stand while lecturing).

Migs, one of my students is a camera bug. He likes to take photos of his classmates (and his teachers).

Today (13 September 2008) I saw my photos in Migs' multiply site.

These photos captured a moment in my teaching life when even though I was sick I still gave a lecture in class :)

Pisay Concert 2: PSHS '77 Representatives

.

Representatives of PSHS Batch '77 performing on stage at PETA Theater in Quezon city on 3 September 2008. From the photo collection of Raffy Saldaña (http://raffysaldana.blogspot.com)

I never thought that one day I would become a concert performer...

Last September 3, 2008 some of my batchmates in highschool (PSHS Class of 1977) performed onstage at PETA Theater in Quezon City for the Pisay Concert 2 (PC2) a benefit concert which is a project of the PSHS Alumni Association.

Our group (Chloe [daughter of Cora] , Cora, Emy, Claire, Ana [aughter of Claire], Mon D., Noel O., Raffy, and Caloy) sang the following songs which became popular in the '70s: 1. Ikaw Pa Rin (by Tito Mina), 2. T.L. Ako sa Iyo, and 3. Country Roads by John Denver. When we sang Country Roads, we changed the lyrics a little bit so that Country Roads became 'Agham Road' (where PSHS is located). My batchmate, Caloy (Dr. Carlo Arcilla, Director of the National Geological Studies (NIGS) in the University of the Philippines - Diliman) impressed the audience with his rendition of the following songs: 1. Samba Song by Bong Pinera, 2. A Certain Sadness, and 3. Norwegian Wood (instrumental).

After our concert performance I told one of my batchmates jokingly: Now we can add one more line in our curriculum vitae -- "Concert Performer" :)

Below is the link to photos of our group taken during Pisay Concert 2:
