'BE CREATIVE': DOST S&T Article About Me Five Years Ago

Education: Saldaña formally installed as PSHS Director


In a simple yet warm ceremony, Dr. Rafael Saldaña was formally installed as Philippine Science High School(PSHS) Main Campus Director on 28 February 2003 at the PSHS Auditorium in Diliman, Quezon City.

Saldaña, also an alumnus of the PSHS (Batch 1977), started guidingthe country’s leading science high school on 21 November 2002, exactly 100 days prior to his formal installation. Saldaña sworn in together with Department of Scienceand Technology (DoST) and PSHS Chairman of Board ofTrustees Dr. Estrella F. Alabastro and PSHS System Executive Director Dr. Ramon R. Miranda.

In his speech, Saldaña summarized his plans and vision for the campus following the acronym BE CREATIVE. It stands for:

Basic Curriculum enhancement;
E-science and e-learning;
Creative and proactive leadership;
REsearch in Mathematics, science and technology;
commitment to PSHS;
Application of information technology in education;
Teaching competency for student-centered learning;
Improvementof infrastructure and internet connectivity;
Values formation; and
Ecological Awareness.

Saldaña earned his doctor’s degree in mathematical and computational biophysics from Monash University in Australia. He is also a recipient of several awards and citations that include 1997 National Academy of Science and Technology’s Outstanding Published Paper Award and 2001 Dean’s Award for Outstanding Faculty in Research at the Ateneo de Manila University.
