Title:

"Image Based Reasoning using Medical Knowledge to improve DiagnosisAssistance"

(Showcases: Early Detection of Brain stroke from brain CT, Histopathology Imaging-based Automatic Breast Cancer Grading.)

Summary:

Taking into account the medical domain knowledge to enhance theefficiency/effectiveness of the computer aided diagnosis systems isstudied using different aspects of the medical knowledge. Our approachesuse medical ontologies in order to narrow the well-known “semantic gap” incontent based medical image retrieval framework. Other more recent of ourapproaches consider a tripolar image-based reasoning system, dynamicallyinvolving a priori knowledge, statistical analysis of medical cases andimage analysis techniques.

The perspectives of these approaches arediscussed regarding to the evolution of the evidence-based medicine. After a short introduction of the medical imaging activities of the IPALFrench-Singaporean lab (Image Perception, Access and Language, NUS, I2RA*STAR, CNRS), and of the ONCO-MEDIA project, my presentation will focuson the Image Based Reasoning Systems using Medical Knowledge to improveDiagnosis Assistance. Two specific topics will be developed: one relatedto the Early Detection of Brain stroke from brain CT, and a second onerelated to the Histopathologic Imaging-based Automatic Breast CancerGrading.Daniel RacoceanuShort biography:Senior Scientist at the French National Research Center (CNRS), DanielRACOCEANU is with Image Perception, Access & Language (IPAL), anInternational Research Unit – (UMI CNRS 2955) created between the CNRS,the National University of Singapore (NUS), the Institute for InfocommResearch (I2R) of the Singaporean Agency for Science, Technology andResearch (A*STAR) and the University Joseph Fourier of Grenoble, France(UJF). His actual researches focus on Intelligent Diagnosis/PrognosisAssistance using Medical Image Knowledge-Based Reasoning Systems, Contentand Context Based Medical Image Retrieval and Medical Multimedia Fusion. His is the PI of ONCO-MEDIA project (ICT –ASIA program) and co-PI ofMMedWeb (Multimedia Medical Conceptual Web for Intelligent InformationAccess) project, a SERC-A*STAR project between NUS, National UniversityHospital, National Healthcare Group and Singapore General HospitalSingapore, CNRS and I2R.More information about my publications:http://www.onco-media.com/default_fichiers/Page430.htmabout the French-Singaporean lab IPAL Singapore:http://ipal.i2r.a-star.edu.sg/and about my previous Research Institute – FEMTO-ST, Besançon, France:http://www.femto-st.fr/en/The-institute/Presentation/index.php
