Title: Interaction of tumor with its microenvironment

Avner FRIEDMAN, Ph.D.
Distinguished Professor of Mathematics and Physical Sciences
Director, Mathematical Biosciences Institute
The Ohio State University, USA

Abstract:

It is well known that the growth of a tumor depends on the environment in which it is located; the tumor and its environment affect each other. In order to develop a predictive model of this interaction, in vitro experiments are performed in which a semi-permeable membraneseparates epithelial tumor cell take from breast cancer and fibroblaststaken either from healthy tissue in the breast or from tumor tissue Theproliferation of the epithelial cells is then measured in both cases overa period of time. I shall describe a mathematical model developed jointlywith Yangjin Kim which describes the above experiments; the model make prediction that agree with the experimental results, and thus can be usedto further explore the interactions between the tumor and it environment.

About the Speaker:

Research Area: Research interests include partial differential equations, both general mathematical theory as well as applications to models that arise in the physical and life sciences, in engineering, and in industry. Dr. Friedman is particularly interested in problems in which phase transitions or moving interfaces are present. Other research interests include control theory and stochastic differential equations.

Short Biography: Professor Friedman is the Director of the Mathematical Biosciences Institute at The Ohio State University, and also tenure as a Distinguished Professor of Mathematical and Physical Sciences. He received his PH.D. degree in 1956 from the Hebrew University. He served as the Director of the Institute for Mathematics and its Application at the University of Minnesota during 1987 – 1999, and as the Director of the Minnesota Center for Industrial Mathematics during the year 1994 – 2001. A few of his honors include membership in the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
