June is National ICT Month

MANILA, Philippines - President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has declared the month of June as "National Information and Communications Technology (ICT) month."This is embodied in Proclamation No. 1521, which she signed last May 28.

Mrs. Arroyo said the proclamation seeks to consolidate the ICT plans of the government and the private sector.

"The government recognizes the need to harmonize and coordinate the government’s and private sector’s ICT programs and projects and other ICT-related initiatives to ensure their consistency with the government’s overall development goals as well as to encourage the principle of developing ICT that is private sector-led, market-based and government-enabled," the proclamation read.

The President ordered all departments to coordinate with CICT to implement the plans, programs, and activities that will fulfill the objectives of the Proclamation. - BusinessWorld

Calculus for Economists

Textbook: Calculus for Business, Economics, Life Sciences, and Social Sciences (9th ed), Barnett, et al.

Course Description: Limits and continuity; derivatives and differentials, some applications of derivatives, antidifferentiation, the definite integral, partial derivatives and the total differential of functions of more than one variable.

Specific objectives:

At the end of the course, the student should be able to:

1. Have an intuitive notion of the concepts of limit and continuity of a function; apply the limit theorems and obtain the asymptotes of the graph of a function.

2. Find the derivative of algebraic, exponential and logarithmic functions; interpret the derivative as a measure of slope and as a rate of change; use derivatives as an aid in sketching the graph of a function and to solve optimization problems.

3. Determine both the definite and the indefinite integrals of functions; interpret the integral as a measure of an area of a region; apply different techniques of integration; solve differential equations.

4. Find the partial derivatives and the higher order partial derivatives of functions of more than one variable; determine the maximum and minimum values of multivariate functions and use the method of Lagrange multipliers to solve constrained optimization problems.

The final grade is computed as follows:

(total score/highest possible sum) x 100%

converted to a letter grade based on the above table.

· A student with a class standing of at least 90% prior to cancellation of the lowest exam may be exempted from taking the final exams.

· There will be no make-up quizzes or homework.

· Use short bond paper and pens in exams.

. Always bring a scientific calculator.

· Absence in a TTh class meeting is considered 1 ½ cuts; in an MWF meeting, 1 cut. Any student who accumulates more than 18 cuts will get a final grade of W. A late is considered a cut.

· No eating, sleeping, use of cellular phones during class. Cellular phones must be in silent mode. Avoid going out of class once classes have started unless there is an emergency. The teacher reserves the right to send anyone outside the classroom on the grounds of discourtesy to the teacher or to a fellow student, misbehavior in the classroom.

I received a message today (6/5/08) from our Mathematics Department Chair Dr. Reginaldo "Reggie" Marcelo regarding the the science award to be conferred by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) to our university (Ateneo) president Fr. Bienvenido "Ben" Nebres, SJ and mathematics faculty Dr. Queena Lee-Chua.

Below is Reggie's message:

Congratulations to Fr. Ben and Queena for being selected as two of the 50 great men and women of science by DOST on its golden anniversary this year.

The 50 top Filipinos of Science will be recognized and awarded by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo in Malacanang sometime soon.

From the Manila Times:

Dr. Queena Lee-Chua passionately spreads the value of understanding science both inside and outside the lecture hall. She has authored hundreds of books, articles, lectures, columns and other teaching and communication tools in which fun and learning are creatively intertwined. She teaches students, parents, media people and practically everybody who wants to learn while having fun through print, radio, TV, the Internet and in person-to-person encounters with audiences.

Fr. Bienvenido Nebres is no ordinary Jesuit priest. He successfully reconciled the fields of science and religion in his work, especially in the development of mathematics and science in the Philippines and Southeast Asia. After finishing his master's and Ph.D. in mathematics at Stanford University in California, he founded the Mathematical Society of the Philippines. He is also one of the founding officers of the Southeast Asian Mathematical Society. He pioneered a consortium of leading universities in Manila to develop Ph.D. programs in mathematics, physics, and chemistry, leading to the development of a critical mass of scientists in these areas. Fr. Nebres chaired the Engineering and Science Education Project of the Department of Science and Technology and directed a team for the Department of Education to develop plans to strengthen elementary and secondary education in the country's poorest provinces.

Annual meetings of the Pacific Asia Conference on Language, Informationand Computation (PACLIC) have provided places where scholars intheoretical and computational linguistics mainly from the Pacific Asiaregion get together to share new ideas about language, information and computation. The 22nd PACLIC, organized under the auspices of the PACLIC SteeringCommittee, endorsed and supported by the Asian Federation of Natural Language Processing (AFNLP), and hosted by the De La Salle University-Manila, will be held at the University of the Philippines Visayas-Cebu College, in Cebu City, Philippines on November 20-22, 2008.

Following the tradition of previous PACLIC meetings in Hong Kong (2001), Jeju, Korea (2002), Singapore (2003), Tokyo, Japan (2004), Taipei(2005), Wuhan, China (2006), and Seoul, Korea (2007), PACLIC 22 emphasizes the integration of theoretical frameworks with applied fields, cognitive accounts for language processing, and computational modeling of language. We invite prospective authors to submit original and unpublished paperson all aspects of theoretical and computational linguistics. Possible topics include but are not limited to: (1) language, (2) information, and (3) computation. Priority will be given to papers that are interdisciplinary and cover a wide range of languages in Asia.

Papers should be submitted online on or before June 30, 2008, using the template provided at http://ccs.dlsu.edu.ph/nlp-team/paclic22

Outstanding papers will be considered as candidates for the best paper prize. Accepted papers will be published in the Conference Proceedings(Previous PACLIC proceedings are indexed by ISTP/ISI Proceedings).

The workshop ADG is a leading international forum to exchange ideas and views, to present research results and progress, and to demonstrate software tools on the intersection between geometry and automated deduction. The main objective of this workshop is to encourage/promote/guide research efforts in the area in an informal setting.

The previous six workshops were held in Pontevedra (2006), Gainesville (2004), Linz (2002), Zurich (2000), Beijing (1998), and Toulouse(1996). The seventh workshop ADG 2008 will be hosted by East China Normal University (ECNU) on its campus in Shanghai, China, from 22nd to 24th September 2008.

Specific topics for ADG 2008 include (but are not limited to)

Polynomial algebra, invariant and coordinate-free methods, probabilistic, synthetic, and logic approaches, techniques forautomated geometric reasoning from discrete mathematics,combinatorics, and numerics.

Symbolic and numeric methods for geometric computation, geometric constraint solving, automated generation/reasoning and manipulation with diagrams.

Design and implementation of geometry software,special-purpose tools, automated theorem provers, experimentalstudies.

Applications of ADG to mechanics, geometric modeling, CAGD/CAD, computer vision, robotics, and education.

Extended abstracts (or full papers if you wish). No page limits.The extended abstracts (or the introduction of the full papers) must address the following aspects explicitly. * Problem: "What is the problem/question/objective?* Motivation: "Why do we work on the problem? What is the importance?"* State of the Art: "What has been done already on the problem?"* Contribution: "What is the main original contribution?"* Main Idea: "What is the main idea underlying the contribution"? Electronic submission as PDF is required. Refereeing

The submitted contributions will be subject to a summary review by the Program Committee, bearing in mind that this first review is mainlyfor presentation, NOT for publication.

Publication-Extended abstracts or full papers accepted for presentation at theworkshop will be available during the meeting, published as an internal document for the participants. We plan to ask the authors of the extended abstracts (and possibly full papers) accepted for presentation at the workshop to submit theirfull and/or revised papers for publication in some formal proceedingsof ADG 2006 after the workshop. The full papers (submitted after the meeting) will be formally reviewed by PC members and external referees. It is expected that the accepted full papers will be published as aspecial issue of some journal or in the Springer Lecture Notes inArtificial Intelligence (LNAI) series. The proceedings of ADG 1996,ADG 1998, ADG 2000, ADG 2002, ADG 2004, and ADG 2006 appeared as LNAI1360, LNAI 1669, LNAI 2061, LNAI 2930, LNAI 3763, and LNAI 4869respectively.

First EUAsiaGrid Training Event, 28 - 31 July 2008 (Malaysia)

The first EUAsiaGrid Training Event from 28 ~31 July 2008, Malaysia

The first EUAsiaGrid Training Event will be hosted by MIMOS from 28 ~31 July 2008 in MIMOS, Malaysia.To help train partners on the effective use and management of the Grid, the first EUAsiaGrid Training Event will be held from 27-31 July 2008 in MIMOS, Malaysia.

This event is designed to teach participants fundamental Grid concepts, how to use gLite for their work and how to install gLite Grid services.The expected participants would be EUAsiaGrid partners, Asia Federation partners, as well as institutes/organization that are interested in Grid computing or any other collaboration partners.

Lecturers of this training will be from INFN (IT), ASGC (TW) and possibly from CESNET (CZ) and HealthGrid (FR) as well. The first EUAsiaGrid Training Event will provide the perfect opportunity for network developing with Asian and European communities, and it is believed to enhance infrastructure collaboration and project application, and reinforce the achievement that EUASiaGrid proposes.

The second EUAsiaGrid Training Event is planed to be hosted by ASGC, Taipei, Taiwan, in 17-19 of October in conjunction with HEPix 2008 Fall Meeting and Grid Camp 2008.

1st Phone Conference (WP5), EUAsia Grid Project (29 May 2008)

Last May 29, 2008 I participated in an international phone conference on the Training Component (WP5) of the EUAsiaGrid Project. The phone conference was organized by the Academia Sinica Grid Computing Center (ASGC) based in Taipei, Taiwan.

End of my Sabbatical Leave

May 31, 2008 marks the end of my sabbatical leave from Ateneo de Manila University.

Starting June 2008 I will resume my regular university functions.

Classes in Ateneo de Manila University will open on Tuesday, June 10, 2008.

This means that I only have one week left to write my reports and to plan for my first semester classes.
